Roxann Smith called the meeting to ord= er at 7:10 at the Lac La Belle Fire hall with approximately 30 members prese= nt.

Roll call was made by Roxann.  President, Vice President, and T= reasurer were present.

 

Approve Agenda:

 

 

Gale Slates requested a review of the digital TV conversion.  Roxa= nn asked for a motion to approve the July meeting agenda.<= /p>

 

Motion by Guy Snyder t= o approve agenda.  Second by Wendell C= arlson.  All were in favor.  Motion carried.

 

Approve Prior Months Minutes:

 

 

Roxann asked for a motion to approve t= he June minutes.

 

Motion by Tom Strohl to approve agenda.  Second by J= ackie Sorenson.  All were in favor= .  Motion carried.

 

President’s Rema= rks and Correspondence:

 

 

Roxann indicated that she did not atte= nd the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge Board Meeting on Tuesday.  She will update SSA at the next meeting as to what will be open this winter.  Township meeting was held on Tue= sday, July 15th and she thanked Richard Schaefer for attending.  The Keweenaw County Board meetin= g was held on Wednesday, July 16th.=   The next meeting will be in Lac La Belle and she would like all to attend.  The DEQ approved th= e Wellhead Protection grant.  A speed s= tudy was requested on M26 in Copper Harbor.  Meg Vivian to speak with residen= t to understand issue due to the cost of the study.  Hunters Point boardwalk work has= been completed.  Roxann discussed= the need for additional defibrillators for the South Shore.  Meg to investigate funding.  Roxann also discussed the condem= ned DNR dock.  Meg will write le= tter to DNR.  SSA did not have any correspondence.

Treasurer:  Jim Sorensen reviewed the Treasurer’s Report.  The balance is $2,664.39.  A copy is available if requested= .

 

Motion by Stella Motto= nen to approve Treasurer’s Report.  Second by Dante Iacovoni.  All were in favor.  M= otion carried.

Unfinished Business:

 

DNR Dock:  Bob Meyers gave a progress report on the dock.  When the water dropped last year= the DNR closed the dock because the steel beams were corroded.  The dock is scheduled for summer= /fall of 2009 to be fixed.  Sugges= tions for the new dock include lowering the dock, replacing the 4x4s with 6x6s,= install fender boards, build slips, add additional picnic tables, replace garbage cans, make handicap accessible, and install fish cleaning station.  If anyone has any additional ide= as, please contact Bob.  Bob will update us at our next meeting.

 

 

Haven Park:   A sign will be erected on the Haven Park Pavilion, “The Haven”.  Kate Langdon indicated that it is being worked on.  Roxann tha= nked Kate and Joe Langdon for their continued support for the pavilion.  Rheta, Mary Strohl, and Ned Huwa= tschek reviewed wording for an historical sign.=   Two estimates were obtained:  $158 from Mark McEvers for a 42” x 28” and $262 from Designotype for a 3’ x 2’.&n= bsp; Rheta also indicated that the Historical Society might help with t= he cost of the sign.  Ned indic= ated that he would talk to Virginia Jamison about donating the land to the Historical Society.  The sig= n is on hold at this time.

 

 

Mail Delivery:  Dante Iacovoni indicated that Gale Slates, Rheta Wolfe, and he have petitions for signatures.  All members are= asked to sign the petition.  The petition will also be posted at Summer Fest.  Rheta will then finalize the pet= itions and take to the post office after Summer Fest.  Rheta would like to finalize our= tasks by August.  Rheta will updat= e the SSA at the next meeting.

 

 

Spring Clean Up:  Rick Olson indicated that the dumpsters were positioned in an awkward place.  Next year Rick will make sure th= ey are placed appropriately.  There= also was a major cleanup on the trail between the river and Deer Lake. Thanks to Ned, Bob Meyers, Rick and Adam Olson, and Jim Sorenson.  Jim Sorenson met with Joe Nelson, zoning commissioner for Keweenaw County, regarding= the McCracken property.  Joe wro= te a letter to McCracken.  A legal notice was also posted.  Thi= s is not a Keweenaw issue but a Grant Township issue.  Jim will bring up to township bo= ard.

 

 

Summer Fest:  Tom Strohl provided an update.  The date is Sunday, August 3rd, from 1 PM to 4 PM, at the Haven Park Pavilion.  If the weather does not cooperat= e, the event is scheduled for the following Sunday, August 10th.  We are planning for 150 guests.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  SSA members and non members are = all welcome.  There will be no c= harge for SSA member and immediate family and a donation for non members.  Live entertainment will be provi= ded by Doug and Lisa McKenzie.  Att= endees should bring a side dish and beverage of their choice.  Please check the website for details.  Members were asked= to sign up for assigned tasks.  The committee asked for $750 for food, prizes, and supplies for Summer Fest.<= o:p>

 

Motion by Dante Iacovo= ni to approve $750.  Second by Lis= a Berg.  All were in favor.  Motion carried.

 

 

Winter Newsletter Committee:  Roxann asked for volunteers.  Rheta will head the committee.  Stella Mottonen, Jackie Sorenson= , and Roxann volunteered.  All mem= bers are asked to forward articles, pictures, or notices to Rheta (birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc) through out the year.<= /p>

 

 

Digital TV Conversion:  Bob Meyers gave an update on the digital TV situation.  Bob will provide= Rheta with a document on how to contact Bart Stupak and what to say.  Rheta will post on our web site.=

 

Secretary Position:

 

Roxann asked if anyone was interested = in the position.  Current offic= ers will fill position until filled.

 

Community Center:

 

Rheta indicated a group of members wou= ld meet after the SSA meeting to finalize changes to the drawing and identify key requirements.  Rheta will communicate changes to Traverse Engineering.  Community Center information wil= l be posted at the SSA Summer Fest.  We will have a petition for signatures.

 

 


New Business:

 

Bulletin Board:  Ned Huwatschek indicated that the current board is in need of repairs.  He suggested that the SSA should remedy the board.  The membe= rs suggested that the board needs to be bigger, sturdier, and a different ty= pe of closure.  Roxann will bri= ng up at the next township meeting for funding.  Joe Langdon offered to get the j= ob done.

Dante Iacovoni:  Requested Meg Viv= ian to attend a future SSA meeting.

 

Roxann Smith:  Informed the SSA = that she and Ned are running for trustees and request your support.  The elections are August 5t= h.  Absentee ballots can be req= uested from Kelly on 289-4292.

 

Kate Langdon:  Reminded everyone= about the rummage sale on Saturday and Sunday.

 

Ed Jenison:  Next weekend is h= is family reunion and invited everyone next Friday at 11 AM.  He has 26 people coming from Finland.

 

Defibrillator Update:&nb= sp; The SSA would like to see each first responder with a defibrillator.  Tom Strohl asked if the proceeds= from the Rummage Sale could go to the defibrillators.  Rick Olson supported the request= .  Roxann thought the Township woul= d pay for one.  Rick to provide up= date at the next meeting.  Also, = Mary Strohl requested CPR training for our area.  Rick Olson will check on trainin= g.

 

First Responder:  <= /span> Roxann also asked if anyone was interested in becomin= g a First Responder.  Approximat= ely 200 hours of training is required.  = See Rick Olson if you are interested.  Also, if you are interested in becoming a fireman, see Rick.

 

Roy Peterson:  Informed SSA memb= ers to review the ballot regarding increase in taxes and veterans millage.  Roy also indicated there will be a public hearing regarding the large conserv= ancy sign at the end of Bete = Grise Road.   Please watch the pap= ers for the notice.
